Koinonia Class explores living simply

Join the Koinonia Class in the Parlor, beginning September 16, as they study the book, Simpler Living, Compassionate Life: A Christian Perspective, by Michael Schut. Class members may purchase this book for $10.50. Amy House is the facilitator of this class.

Jubilee Class begins study of pastoral letter

Consider this:

We live in a world awash in fantasies of freedom. We spend enormous sums of money and immense amounts of psychic energy on these fantasies. We fantasize a free life based variously on power, on sex, on fame, on leisure. Whole industries develop out of these fantasies. Careers are shaped by them. Political movements are launched and fueled by them. But the world we live in is conspicuously and sadly lacking in the experience of freedom. The fantasies are barren: they give birth to nothing in word or deed. For all our elaborate and expensive fantasies, the actual lives that most people live are filled with impotence, boredom, obscurity, and hassle.

Living in the land of the free has not made us free; we are a nation of addicts and complainers. Being provided with freedom of religion has not made us free; coercive cults and enslaving superstitions continue to proliferate. Assembling with people in church and listening to ringing proclamations of freedom—"He whom the Son sets free is free indeed!"—has not made us free. Our churches are attended regularly by the inhibited, the obsessive-compulsive, the fearfully defensive—enough of them to provide outside observers with a stereotype. (Excerpt from Traveling Light by Eugene Peterson, pages 9-10)

Join the Jubilee Class in Room 15 on Sunday mornings, as they struggle and study some modern meditations on Paul’s letter of freedom, the Letter to the Galatians. Class members may purchase this book for $11. This class is facilitated by Chuck Baldwin.

Seekers Class studies three prophets in September

Join the Seekers Class in Room 11 as they look at the lives and the ministries of three prophets among the Israelites. The Rev. Condie Watters will teach this class two more Sunday mornings in September: September 16 and 23.

Seekers Class discusses films

Coming this fall, Covenant will offer an opportunity for film fans to review and to discuss theologically some contemporary films. The groups will look at the theological and biblical themes in contemporary movies.

The Rev. Dr. Gloria Jennings will offer a class, called Developing a Theology of Seeing, on Sunday mornings, beginning September 30, and a series on Wednesday evenings, beginning October 3. Contact Gloria if you have any questions.

20 Somethings push their learning

We are pleased to offer a new Sunday School class for our young adults in their twenties and thirties. The Rev. Alison Messick-Watkins in Room 13 facilitates this class, which is studying Push It!, an exciting 14-session resource designed by young adults for young adults as they seek to engage the Bible. The challenges, problems, and issues faced by young adults are evident as they relate to persons in the Bible with similar experiences. Push It! encourages young adults to explore the Scriptures and make a connection to today’s real-life issues. We hope that our young adults will join the group soon.
